The “triple helix” governing the knowledge based economy
involves universities (research and education), industry
(manufacturing) and governments (decision making) and, proving
to be functional, this concept emerged in Europe was largely
adopted by all the developed countries.
Economic growth mainly
results from the new products and technologies, developed
through interdisciplinary research, adopted by advanced
industrial manufacturing processes, with new or strongly
improved quality, that are cost effective and competitive in the
market. Sustainable economic growth raises the question of
resources and environment, and energy plays a key role, in terms
of energy production, use and waste disposal. The past two
decades witnessed the revival of renewable energies, with novel
solutions targeting higher efficiency and lower costs.
A joint
effort coming from RTD, education, companies, administration and
policy makers resulted in a significant increase in the amount
of renewables already implemented. The 3rd edition of the
Conference for Sustainable Energy represents the opportunity to
analyze the progress and to sense the openings expected for the
next years. During CSE 2011, the contributions of RTD groups all
over the world are welcome and we are looking forward to
fruitful discussions that may contribute in (re)shaping this
field.
