  • UNITBV team, awarded at the Romanian Research Gala

UNITBV team, awarded at the Romanian Research Gala

01 February 2023

Lucian Mihai Itu, Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, along with 11 other colleagues, all of them conducting their activity within Transilvania University of Brașov, won the prize for the best team of young researchers, in the framework of the Research Gala.

Five finalist teams, with works in various fields, such as astrophysics, theatre art, machine learning or medicine, competed for this award. The research work achieved by the team of Brașov in the field of “personalized medicine” was, however, designated the best.

For the Romanian research gala, Lucian Mihai Itu, together with his colleagues, presented 5 achievements in the above-mentioned field, which were considered to be the most valuable, under the “Young Researchers – Teams” category. The event took place on the last day of January and was organized by the Ministry of Research. Overall, 26 researchers, either individually or in teams, were finalists of this gala.

The works presented by the team from Transilvania University of Brașov fall within the field of personalized medicine, resorting to artificial intelligence. Capitalizing on their collaborations with several hospitals in Bucharest, Cluj, Târgu Mureș or Brașov, and with companies in the medical field, the 12 researchers have developed various software that help doctors in the process of diagnosing or treating patients. The created software and algorithms analyse imaging, laboratory or EKG data, which are then used for cardiovascular pathologies and cancer.

It is worth noting that all these research works do not stop at the stage of ideas, but are to be implemented on a large scale, so that the software developed will facilitate the work of as many medical personnel as possible. In collaboration with a private company, Prof. dr. Eng. Lucian Mihai Itu’s team is about to launch a useful application for diagnosing the severity of coronary stenoses. The software is currently under clinical testing and will soon be launched on the international market.

The team that won the prize of the Romanian Research Gala consists of 12 young people, all under the age of 40:
· Daniel Bunescu – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Costin Ciușdel – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Manuela Danu – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Cosmin Hatfaludi – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Cosmin Niță – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Iulian Ogreveanu – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Andreea Popescu – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Andrei Puiu – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Ioana Antonia Țacă – Faculty of mathematics and Computer Science
· Ana Maria Vizitiu – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Diana Voinescu – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
· Lucian Mihai Itu – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Within the Romanian Research Gala, the team coordinated by Sorin Vlase, Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, within Transilvania University of Brașov, was also nominated in the final under the category “Experienced Researchers - Teams", in the field of Nuclear Engineering.
