6+1. Painting and Photography from Cuba

6 February - 1 March 2023, Multicultural Centre 

On Monday, 6 February, starting at 6.00 p.m., the Multicultural Centre of Transilvania University of Brașov will host the opening of the exhibition 6+1. Painting and photography from Cuba. Organized by Transilvania University of Brașov, in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Romania, the exhibition can be visited until 1 March 2023. The event will be honoured by the presence of Prof. dr. Eng. Ioan Vasile Abrudan, the Rector of our University, and H.E. Mrs Déborah Leticia Ojeda Valedón, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in Bucharest.

The exhibition brings together the works of six contemporary Cuban painters, Eduardo Abela Torras, Juan Leo Brower, Yari Delgado, Sándor González Vilar, Oscar Javier Jacas, Yasbel Pérez Domínguez, complemented by Sonia Almaguer Darna’s photographs.

Eduardo Abela Torras (1963) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro; he has more than 17 personal exhibitions in Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the USA, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama and Portugal, but also in the People's Republic of China, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Malaysia. Considered one of the best artists of his generation, Eduardo Abela Torras has received several awards, including the Distinction for National Culture 2021.

Juan Leo Brower (1973) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro; his works could be seen in countries such as Cuba and Spain, as well as in about 30 group exhibitions. Some of his works can be found in private collections in Spain, Mexico, Japan, the United States, France, China, Great Britain, Italy and Cuba.

Yari Delgado (1992) is an illustrator of children’s books, and more, and she collaborates with Cuban and foreign publishing houses. She is interested in creative photography. She has exhibited in Brazil, Cuba and Italy, and she won several illustration and photography competitions, organized by Cuba, UNICEF and Cittadellarte / Fondazione Pistoletto.

Sándor González Vilar (1977) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro. He worked together with filmmakers such as Walter Salles (Brazil), Enrique Pineda Barnet and Lester Hamlet (Cuba). He has around 52 personal exhibitions and more than 160 group exhibitions, both in Cuba and abroad. He participated in Toronto Contemporary Art Fair, Canada (2003), ARCO Contemporary Art Fair, Madrid, (2004, 2005, 2006), and in 3 editions of the Havana Biennale. His works can be found in private collections in Cuba and abroad. He participated in the creation of 59 mural paintings. He has illustrated books and designed album covers, but also textile designs.

Oscar Javier Jacas (1980) studied painting and ceramics; and, at the age of 19, he was already participating in the International Art Fair. He works in the media, in collaboration with children's art centres and other institutions to develop film sets, toys and kinetic works. He made sets in Belgium and Germany. Some of his works belong to private and institutional collections in Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Belgium, England, Italy, Spain, the United States, Argentina and Cuba. His work has been exhibited so far in Cuba, Colombia, Panama, Mexico and Peru.

Yasbel Pérez Domínguez (1970) studied painting and ballet, and she graduated from the University of Arts in 1995. She has 14 personal exhibitions in Cuba, the USA, France and Puerto Rico, as well as 8 collective exhibitions both in her country and in the USA, France and Uruguay. One of her works belongs in the collection of the International Museum of Women in San Francisco, California. She teaches children painting classes within community workshops.

Sonia Almaguer Darna (1971) is a graduate of the University of the Arts in Havana. She has been a photographer since 2013 and is interested in creative photography, portraiture, documentary photography and children’s book illustrations. She has participated in several group exhibitions in Argentina, Cuba, the United Kingdom, the United States and Italy, having so far 20 personal exhibitions. She collaborates with publications such as Conjunto, Tablas, La Jiribilla, Cuba escena and Delante, in Germany, but also with publishing houses in Cuba and abroad. 

The exhibition can be visited from 6 February to 1 March, every day, from Monday to Friday, between 2.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. 

The entrance is free.
