International conference “Interdisciplinary Approach to Musical Instruments – from Design and Testing to the Audience”

18-20 July 2024, “Sergiu T. Chiriacescu” Conference Centre

Between 18 and 20 July 2024, Transilvania University of Brașov will host the first international interdisciplinary conference on the research, design, manufacturing and testing of violins, bearing the title “Interdisciplinary Approach to Musical Instruments – from Design and Testing to the Audience”.

The event will take place in ”Sergiu T. Chiriacescu” Conference Centre.

Romania, known for a long time as a significant producer of musical instruments, has seen an increase in the production of violins all over Transylvania in recent years, due to the professionalism of the specialised companies and workrooms in this region.

Transilvania University of Brașov, the first and only Romanian university to specialise in wood engineering, organises this conference with the support of the interdisciplinary project team ACADIA (61PCE/2022, PN-III-P4-PCE2021-0885), coordinated by Prof. Eng. Mariana Domnica Stanciu, PhD. This international event aims to bring to the fore and draw the attention of both Romanian and foreign researchers, coming from several continents, on the production of violins.

The conference programme is so structured as to explore the many facets of the violin – from tree to artistic impressions, from wood science to craftsmanship, and from the acoustics of the violin to its resonance on stage.

A highlight of the conference is the Exhibition of Stringed Musical Instruments, featuring pieces from the collection “Gliga Musical Instruments” and from the collections of the luthiers within the “Association of Romanian Luthier Artists”, including Alin Stoica, Claudiu Mare, Virgil Bândilă, Paul Bândilă, Aurelian Mare and Călin Vultur.

The concert “ROMANIA UNIVERSALIS”, performed by the violinist Diana Jipa and the pianist Ștefan Doniga, will also take place during the conference, under the aegis of the Music Centre within Transilvania University of Brașov. This musical approach aims to place the jewels of Romanian music culture into a context of masterpieces of a similar value, and thus makes up a particularly attractive and impressive musical programme through its virtuosity and refinement, thereby confirming the value of Romanian culture in the European context.
