Why Democracy Now? What It Means to Be a Citizen in the Era of Post-truth and Misinformation : Presentation and Q&A session

6 November 2025, at 2:00 p.m., Training Hub Hall, Rectorate Building

The phenomenon of misinformation and public manipulation through propaganda and dissemination of fake-news is on the rise worldwide. Easy access to information and social networks, diversification of sources and, more recently, rapid development of artificial intelligence might turn into genuine weapons and destructive tools in the hands of malicious actors who aim at destabilising the societies based on the principles of democracy.

Against this backdrop, youth, especially teenagers, often become the favourite targets. While waiting for the introduction of a study discipline dedicated to media education and development of critical thinking into the curriculum, as is happening in more and more European countries, there is a growing need to involve civil society and credible media institutions in activities and events drawing the attention of both pupils and students, as well as teaching personnel, to the danger of misinformation.

The International Alliance of Romanian Journalists and veridica.ro platform, supported by the Government of the Netherlands, invites you to a discussion themed on Why Democracy Now? What It Means to Be a Citizen in the Era of Post-truth and Misinformation, with a view to developing the students’ skills to identify fake news, concocts and propaganda. The discussion will be moderated by journalists experienced in combating and dismantling fake news, both on veridica.ro platform and in other well-known and credible Romanian publications.

The event will take place on Thursday, 6 November 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in Training Hub Hall, Rectorate building, Transilvania University of Brașov (29 Eroilor Blvd).
