Chamber Jazz at Transilvania University: Jerome Sabbagh & Danny Grissett duet

21 December 2022, at 7 p.m.

Settled in New York, the saxophonist Jerome Sabbagh and the pianist Danny Grissett have been playing together since 2012. A certain way of understanding and relating to tradition, a penchant for lyricism, but also a preference for a certain sound are just some of the things that brought them together. With 10 years of collaboration behind, the two are still interested in exploring the possibilities that arise in the intimate setting that the duet entails.

Saxophonist and composer, Jerome Sabbagh was born in Paris in 1973, and has been living in New York since 1995. He is one of the last saxophonists who had the chance to play with Paul Motian. In 2011, after a concert together, the legendary drummer invited him to Village Vanguard for a week, where he performed with New Trio (along with Paul Motian and Ben Monder).

A prolific composer, open to the new, as well as a musician with strong roots in the jazz tradition, Jerome Sabbagh has led several bands in recent years. The quartet with which he has been playing for 10 years (with Ben Monder, Joe Martin and Ted Poor) released three albums acclaimed by the critics, including “The Turn” (Sunnyside Records) which was considered one of the best releases of the year 2014 by Boston Globe, L.A. Times and DownBeat. Jerome Sabbagh performed with Victor Lewis, Bill Stewart, Greg Hutchinson, Billy Drummond, Eliot Zigmund, Andrew Cyrille, Damion Reid, Reggie Workman, Matt Penman, Joe Sanders, Lage Lund, Guillermo Klein, Mike Moreno, Laurent Coq and Jean- Michel Pilc. He has also participated in some of the most famous festivals in the world, such as Newport, San Francisco, Paris, Tokyo and Medellin.

Originally from Los Angeles, California, the pianist and composer Danny Grissett is an important voice on the New York scene. After moving to New York in 2003, Grissett quickly became the first choice for many renowned artists such as Vincent Herring, Nicholas Payton, Vanessa Rubin, Louis Hayes, Steve Wilson, Buster Williams, Benny Golson and Jeremy Pelt. For the last ten years, he has been part of Tom Harrell's quintet. In 2006, Grissett released his first trio album, “Promise”, on the Criss Cross Jazz label, a debut rated by Allmusic.com as by far one of the best debuts of 2006. Grissett continues to participate in jazz festivals and to play in clubs all over the world. His latest album, “Remembrance”, was released on Savant in 2017, and was awarded 4 out of 5 stars by DownBeat.

The entrance is free.
