Exhibition opening Recycle Your Technology

30 August - 10 September 2024, Multicultural Centre

“Taking place in four cities of our country, namely Reșița, Arad, Brașov, Bucharest, the project Recycle Your Technology targets a wide audience and aims at promoting the practices of recycling among both adults and children. The artists Gheorghe Iosif and Dorian Bolca are both recognised for their sound and image experiments, respectively within Kinema Ikon in Arad and Nava C2 in Timișoara. They are joined by two other artists, Denis Flueraru and Sergiu Doroftei, selected through an open-call. This initiative aims at amplifying the ecological message of the project, but also at fostering the discovery of artists interested in recycle art-related topics and methods, especially in the field of former technologies.

The visions of the four artists, Dorian Bolca, [d s l x] Gheorghe Iosif, Denis Flueraru and Sergiu Doroftei, with whose participation Recycle Your Technology takes shape and content, present four installations in which several components of electrical / electronic devices marked by the sign of obsolescence are turned into generators of light, sound and movement.

These artists’ creativity will also be a catalyst for the educational programme “What’s up with contemporary art?” through which the very young audience will create this exercise of recontextualizing the components of various electrical devices and turning them into a unique type of kinetic installations.” [ excerpt of Suzana Dan’s curatorial text]

“Recycle Your Technology” is an initiative that promotes increased awareness of the recycling and reuse practices on technological resources through the medium of art. The travelling exhibition will be hosted by the Art and Industry Salon of Reșița, Art Museum of Arad, Apollonia Cultural Centre of Brașov and Rezidența9 of Bucharest.

Partners: Rezidența9, Art and Industry Salon of Reșița, Amateur Filmmaker Museum, Kinema Ikon, Art Museum of Arad, Multicultural Centre of Transilvania University of Brașov, Volens Association, Eco Positive
Graphic design: Sorina Popescu

Rezidența9 is the cultural centre of Foundation9, established and supported by BRD Groupe Société Générale.
Project co-financed by the National Cultural Fund Management (AFCN).

Schedule of workshops:
▪31 August, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. – Denis Flueraru’s workshop, “Sonic Explorations"
The workshop conceived and hosted by the artist Denis Flueraru involves the creation of a sound installation by the participants themselves, by means of a contact microphone that they will make during the workshop.
▪31 August, 3:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. – Sergiu Doroftei’s workshop, “Creating a Theremin”
Within the workshop created by the artist Sergiu Doroftei, the young attendees will make a theremin together with him. The theremin is a sound installation built by breaking down several radios and cassette players, with which the audio cassette tape is combined and records an audio piece in a loop.
▪07 September, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. – Gheorghe Iosif‘s workshop [ d s l x ], “Sonic Artefact: Sonic Spaces”
Sound installations that combine the idea of graffiti with the immersive power of sound. Their aim is to turn ordinary spaces into immersive sound environments, by resorting to hidden or camouflaged MP3 players integrated into recycled electronics.
▪10 September, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. – Dorian Bolca’s workshop, “Dimmable Lamps”
Creative workshop for making lamps with adjustable intensity from casings, pieces and scraps of old electronic devices (TV sets, radios, lamps, clocks, watches, and more).
